Installation of the First Day of Peace painting on April 30, 2008
The painting was done in 1922. It is 18 feet 3inces by 8 feet 10 inches. The painting had been on loan for 25 years to the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. The National Park Service’s new battlefield visitor’s center had no spot for it.
The scene depicts Civil War General’s Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee on horseback in a pastoral setting. The First Day of Peace is the last of the trio. It was moved to the Mable Lloyd Ridgely Research Room in April 2008.
