NCC-253:

On May 2, 1914, the Delaware Congressional Union and Delaware Equal Suffrage Association held a parade in Wilmington. Approximately 400 suffragists marched from the Pennsylvania Railroad Station to the New Castle County Court House at 10th and Market Streets. The Wilmington Equal Suffrage Study Club, a Black women’s suffrage organization, participated as a segregated group that was led by Mrs. Blanche Williams Stubbs. Once the parade reached the Court House, Colorado Senator John Shafroth and Mrs. Jessie Hardy Stubbs of Illinois gave speeches to the crowd. The parade was part of a national effort to demonstrate women’s readiness to vote.

Installed in 2021.
