DELAWARE DAY COMMISSION

In 1939, the General Assembly decided that the fact that Delaware was the first state to ratify the Federal Constitution, which it did on December 7, 1787, was worthy of annual celebration. Thus, the Delaware Day Commission was born to commemorate this historic event. The Commission consisted of three members who served a term of four years. Their duty was to stage “suitable and proper” celebrations in all three counties annually on December 7th.”1 In 1970, this responsibility was transferred to the Department of State (RG 1325).2
