KENT COUNTY MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY COLLECTION
The Kent County Mutual Insurance Company was incorporated in Dover, Delaware on February 22, 1847 by the Delaware State Legislature “for the purpose of insuring their (the policyholders) respective dwelling houses, stores, barns, shops and other buildings, household furniture, merchandise and other property against loss or damage by fire” (DL, Vol. 10, ch. 197). The company was authorized to begin operation whenever applications for insurance reached the amount of thirty thousand dollars. Agents were located in various communities across a broad area encompassing Kent, Sussex, and lower New Castle Counties in Delaware; and sections of Worchester, Wicomico, Somerset, Dorchester, Caroline, Kent, and Talbot Counties in Maryland. The company operated continuously until it was bought out by the New Castle Mutual Insurance Company on July 1, 1962.
Kent County Mutual began as an association of neighbors who pooled their resources in order to cope with disaster incurred by its members, feeling that a calamity upon any one would be more easily borne if shared among the many policy holders.
