JOHN C. HOPKINS PLOTS COLLECTION
This collection was a gift to the State Archives from Mrs. John C. Hopkins of Dover, Delaware in 1954. The collection of surveys of Kent County numbers nearly one hundred items. Many of the plots on the surveys were drawn by Mr. Nehemiah Clark or Mr. William Atkinson, early surveyors of Kent County. These were used as reference material by John C. Hopkins, a noted Kent County surveyor during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Born near Farmington on February 26, 1865, Mr. Hopkins was principal of the Frederica Schools from 1887 to 1893. In the latter years he commenced his career as a private surveyor. John C. Hopkins died on May 15, 1942, at age 77.
The records in this collection date from 1820 to the first decade of the twentieth century. There also several nineteenth century copies of colonial surveys. The majority of the documents are oversized.
This collection contains important and useful information concerning land transactions in Kent County. it is especially valuable to persons interested in locating and plotting early surveys or grants.
