By an act of the General Assembly in April of 1883 a Board of Immigration was established. Its purpose was the encouragement of immigration from foreign States and States of the union.
Duties of the Commissioners included: encouraging immigration into this state, preparing and publishing descriptive literature with maps; appointing agents in Europe and elsewhere to encourage immigration; securing special rates of fare for emigrants; encouraging the formation of local agricultural societies for procuring foreign labor; and the representation of schools and facilities of communication offered by the state.
Legislation creating this Commission stipulated that it only remain in force for two years, and no longer, thus it ended in April 1885.
[For a later Immigration Commission see RG 1380.]
