Historical marker NC-57: The Bear

NC-57:

Near this spot stood the old Bear Tavern. Used from Colonial times until 1845, when old building was destroyed. Generals Washington and Lafayette, and many other famous people used this inn in their passage north or south to and from Chesapeake Bay.

Installed in 1932.
