Revolutionary War Oaths of Allegiance collection graphic

This series contains Oaths of Allegiance or declarations of fidelity sworn to the United States or the State of Delaware between 1777 and 1784. The documents show the oath taken, the name of the person administering the oath, the date, and the signature of the person swearing the oath. Lists of Delaware residents who swore oaths are included, as well as oaths from individuals. A list of New Jersey residents who swore an oath of allegiance to the United States, administered by Caesar Rodney in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1777, is also included. There are also transcripts of some documents, two brief academic papers on the history of the Oaths of Allegiance, and correspondence about these records between the Delaware Public Archives and other parties from around 1927 to 1943.
