The program is free to the public and no reservations are required. The Delaware Public Archives is located at 121 Duke of York Street in Dover, Delaware. For more information contact Tom Summers (302) 744-5047 or e-mail Thomas Summers.
Dover Air Force Base - The Early Years
After the United States entered World War II in late 1941, the newly completed Dover municipal airfield was leased to the U.S. Army Air Corps and assigned to the Eastern Defense Command as a coastal patrol base. At this time a handful of soldiers were assigned to the growing Dover Army Air Field, with the C-47 arriving in 1943 to patrol Delaware’s coastline for enemy submarines. Later in the War, the base hosted Air to Air missile testing and pilot training squadrons in addition to safeguarding the eastern seaboard. The mission of the base changed over the years, and Dover is now home to a fleet of C-5 and C-17 cargo planes, able to provide crucial airlift support to not only to military conflicts but also to humanitarian crises around the world and here at home. Today there are more than 22 aircraft, 3,500 active duty military personnel, 1,200 civilians and 1,900 reservists attached to the base. Delaware Library Catalog Now Includes DPA's Books
Now it is easier than ever to search through the historical texts and reference books located in the Mabel Lloyd Ridgely Research Room at the Delaware Public Archives! DPA's books, published volumes, and periodicals are now part of the Delaware Library Catalog and you can search for a specific book, author, or subject without ever setting foot in the Research Room! Some of these books can only be found at DPA, as no other Delaware library or research facility has a copy of many of our unique works on genealogy and Delaware History. It should be remembered that, unlike a library, no original documents may be "checked out" or otherwise removed from the premises. These unique books are only available for viewing in the Research Room. In most cases photocopying services are available for a fee.
To locate books and published volumes from our collections, be sure to select "Delaware Public Archives" from the drop-down library menu box on the right hand side of the Delaware Library Catalog Homepage. To view subscription databases from home like "Accessible Archives" or "Heritage Quest," sign in using your Delaware Library Card barcode and PIN number.
For more information, contact Moira Conlan at 302-744-5035. Look for more DPA collections to be added to the Delaware Library Catalog in the near future!
