In the 1890s, two publications were printed that left a valuable photographic timepiece of Delaware during the era. In 1893, the W.H. Parish Publishing Company printed Art Work of Wilmington. This book included photographs of public buildings, street scenes, schools, churches and other views of the city. Following this book’s release, a similar publication, focusing on other areas of the state but also including Wilmington, was printed by the Charles Madison Company in 1898. Entitled Art Work of Delaware, this publication was released as twelve separate large format booklets. Both publications include history about the state and Wilmington, in particular, but the true value in these sources is in the photographs. The Delaware booklets include several duplicate photographs that were originally printed in the Wilmington publication. The duplications have been removed for this web exhibit. In addition, the original captions have been included with each photograph. Both Art Work of Wilmington and Art Work of Delaware are part of the Archives’ Rare Book Collection.
