  will examine the early days of the Lower Counties on the Delaware und
 er the proprietary governance of William Penn and his successors.\n\nW
 e will delve into the conditions that ultimately led them to seek sepa
 ration and form an independent state. We will look at some of the chal
 lenges faced by the nascent state as it recovered from the economic an
 d social tolls of the War of Independence. And finally\, how “Separati
 on Day” came to be celebrated in the City of New Castle as a commemora
