Genealogical and historical description:

Request by the Wilmington-Deepwater Tunnel Company to the Board of Harbor Commissioners to build a tunnel under the Delaware River. The tunnel was projected to carry vehicular traffic from Pigeon Point, Wilmington, to Deepwater Point, New Jersey, a short distance north of the current Delaware Memorial Bridge.

Scope and Contents:

The application describes the scope of the project including a history of the applicant, tunnel location, specifications, construction methods, approach roadways, estimate of costs, and traffic studies. A number of exhibits accompany the application. These include an aerial photo of the proposed location with tunnel and new roadway features included, maps showing the location of tunnel and arterial roads, colorized drawings of the tunnel, right-of-way maps, graphs showing growth of vehicular traffic at three crossings of the Delaware River, a trial financial schedule, and a financial syllabus. Also included as exhibits are copies of the New Jersey application, meeting minutes, and resolution; the United States War Department correspondence, notice of public hearing, and minutes of the public hearing; and correspondence from consulting engineers.
