100th Anniversary

Surrounded by family members, Dillwyn and Gigi Parrish leave Claymont for their honeymoon on October 3, 1927. Although they planned on a cross country trip to California, Gigi was severely injured in a crash in the southwest. After she recovered, they completed the trip by train.

A Unique Honeymoon

An author from Colorodo, Dillwyn Parrish was thirty-three years old when he married sixteen year old Gertrude McElray. Know as Gigi, Gertrude was from Connecticut originally. It was the first marriage for both the bride and groom.

The Purnell Collection of photographs contains representations a wide range of subjects and time periods that give an excellent view of Sussex County life. There are also some from Kent and New Castle Counties. The collection is divided into three categories: places, with street scenes, businesses, buildings and transportation; portraits and subjects.
