A Sailor’s Death
John Murray, a New Castle Countian served on the U.S.S. Monitor as a coal purser during the Civil War. Many Civil War veterans died without funds for a proper burial. The Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union veterans, furnished the family with the necessary funds.
This document is found in the State Treasures Office collection. The Grand Army of the Republic collection contains certificates of death and allocation of funds, some bills, receipts and correspondence related to the office.
