Kent County Mutual Insurance Records can provide a wealth of information about specific structures. This 19th century insurance record from the Milton area includes drawings of the buildings and the surrounding area.

Insuring Our Property

This plot shows the location of property the town of Milton was insuring for the Mayor’s office. The policy documents the building’s dimensions, contents, method of heating, number of rooms, type of construction and location. In the 18880s, the company had an additional page for the agent to fill out which showed the location and surrounding properties. The Kent County Mutual Insurance Company incorporated in February of 1847 by the Delaware State Legislator. In 1962, the company was sold to the New Castle Mutual Insurance Company.

This collection includes applications, policies and cancellations. Kent County properties were not the only ones insured through this company. Lower New Castle and Sussex Counties and many of the counties on the Eastern Shore of Maryland are also included.
